There were stars in my eyes that I was furiously trying to blink away. I'd hit my head on the bookshelf when I'd gotten flung across Xandra's messy room. The funny thing was?

It wasn't even Xandra who'd thrown me.

It was Iona, who was grappling with Xandra even now. Both of them were growling, snarling, gone full vampire right here in the semi-dark of Xandra's anime-glutted room. Fangs were flashing, fingernails were bared, and black blood was already going everywhere.

I never thought I could be afraid of Xandra, but...I was.

They moved so fast they were like a blur, as if trying to remind me why meddling in the affairs of vamps as a human was a potentially-lethal proposition. The two of them slammed into the far wall as Lockwood retreated, dragging an open-mouthed Mrs. Stewart away from the door.

They smashed to the ground and rolled around, a blur of silvery blonde and lilac.

“What in the world is going on?” Mrs. Stewart cried from out in the hall.

“Stay back,” Lockwood said, just out of my sight. “You are in grave danger–”

Xandra snarled, an unearthly, inhuman sound. Somehow, Iona managed to throw her to the ground, pinning her by her neck, having pulled a stake from who knew where. She rammed it against the side of Xandra's neck – curious placement, I thought, even in the fog of my head injury – and said, “Settle down, anime kitty,” her voice tinged with anger.

Xandra reacted as most of us would to having a sharp object at her neck and being told to calm down; she gnashed her teeth up at Iona, pale purple hair shaking.

I could barely look at her without my heart crumbling to pieces again. “Xandra, please. I know that you have to be somewhere in there. Your mom is here and she’s worried sick.”

Xandra lifted off the ground like a rocketship with an incredible shove, taking both her and Iona into the ceiling. Plaster caved in as they crashed into it, and the two of them resumed the fight in midair, twisting and turning as they came down. I jumped sideways into the closet as they came slamming down right where I'd been sitting.

“Xandra, you are safe, it’s okay,” I said to the blurry, twisting mass of them. “We're here for you. You can come with us, get some rest–”

They parted and suddenly I could see them clearly. With a jolt I realized Iona was injured. Badly. Xandra was pure fury, unbound, and Iona was trying to hold back. Constantly being on the defense...it had gotten her hurt. Black blood ran down her arm from three deep gouges near her shoulder. A trickle of it came down the back of her neck as well.

I reached up into my hair for a stake...and found nothing.

A bang came from the hall, and suddenly Orianna and Aureus burst into the room, their long shadows stretching in. “Lady Cassandra, are you all right?” Aureus shouted.

Xandra’s gaze darted up. She was on top of Iona, digging her claws in.
